I missed the October 26, 2012 Denton High School chess club meeting because I was presenting at the Texas Council for the Social Studies. Twenty people attended my talk on Teaching Social Studies with Chess, based on my book. In my absence, International Master Doug Root played a simultaneous exhibition against 10 Denton High School chess club members. Here are press releases about two upcoming events for me.
Friday, November 2, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. volunteers from the Denton High School chess club will play chess against the public at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 2325 Stemmons, Lewisville, TX 75067. The event is free. The high school students will be accompanied by their coach, former U.S. Women’s Chess Champion Alexey Root. Dr. Root also teaches chess at Greenhill School and chess and education online courses for The University of Texas at Dallas. Root's educational books on chess will be available for purchase at Barnes & Noble. “Each of my books has lesson plans and activities that were tested in North Texas schools and public libraries,” said Root. “No prior knowledge of chess is needed to read my books. My books enable educators, librarians, and parents to teach chess to improve children’s thinking.” The Denton High School chess club was formed during the 2010-2011 academic year and meets from 4 to 5 p.m. on Fridays. Fred Mueller, a Denton High School math teacher, is the club’s sponsor. The Denton High School chess team (made up of several club members) was the top finishing high school chess team from North Texas at the 2012 Texas Scholastic Chess Championships.
