Dr. Alexey Root will be presenting a “Q & A” after the 7:15 p.m. showing of Brooklyn Castle this Saturday, December 8, at the Cinemark West Plano. To prepare for the Q & A, she researched what has happened to the I.S. 318 students profiled in Brooklyn Castle in the almost three years since the filming wrapped.
Pobo Efekoro, a junior at Forest Hills High School in Queens, is close to being an expert chess player (rated 1948, as of 12-6-12), top 1.6% of USCF-rated juniors under age 21. Expert is 2000-2200 under the United States Chess Federation (USCF) ratings. Master is over 2200.
Alexis Paredes, a junior at Edward R. Murrow HS, is a chess expert, rated 2067, is in the top .8% of USCF-rated juniors.
Rochelle Ballantyne, a senior at Brooklyn Tech, top .9% at 2057. Rochelle was just awarded a full scholarship to Stanford University, according to Elizabeth (Vicary) Spiegel’s Facebook posting.
Justus Williams, a freshman at the Bronx Center for Science and Math, last weekend (November 30-December 2, 2012) won the 9th grade championship of the U.S. His USCF rating as of 12-6-12 is 2348. Top .1% of USCF-rated juniors.
Patrick Johnston is a sophomore at Neptune High School in New Jersey. After a break from chess playing, Patrick is now playing "first board" for his high school. His USCF rating is 667.
Dr. Root's latest book, Thinking with Chess: Teaching Children Ages 5-14, has an appendix about Brooklyn Castle.
