Dr. Alexey Root

William R. presented his last-round game from SuperNationals V. Pairs of students followed along on their boards as he showed the moves on the demonstration board (Smart Board). William halted the game at critical points so that the pairs could spend five minutes figuring out what happened next.

Special visitor to the Denton High School chess club was Jonathan K., who had been part of Dr. Alexey Root’s chess class at Strickland Middle School five years ago. Read, Write, Checkmate: Enrich Literacy with Chess Activities (Libraries Unlimited, 2009) features the work of Jonathan and his classmates. Now Jonathan is a freshman at Tarrant County College and has started a chess club there.
