At Greenhill School chess club on Tuesday, October 29, Dr. Alexey Root taught the Wolf and Sheep activity from Read, Write, Checkmate: Enrich Literacy with Chess Activities. For the beginner group, she taught the value of the pieces after the students experienced the power of the queen (9 points) against the eight pawns (each pawn is one point).
For the intermediate and advanced groups, she added kings for both sides. Thus one side had a king and queen and the other had a king and eight pawns. Dr. Root had the students play until checkmate. While pairs were trying this drill, she also took individual students aside to test them on the two-rook checkmate, king and queen checkmate, and king and rook checkmate.
