Dr. Alexey Root taught at the Coppell Gifted Association’s MOSAIC from July 25-29, 2016. She had four students from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and a different four students from 10:30 a.m. to noon. All students were entering grades 4-8 this fall, which means that the age range was roughly nine years old to thirteen years old.
Because none of the students had been in MOSAIC week one for chess, Dr. Root reused those plans from June 6-10 (see June 10th MonRoi blog posting for those lesson outlines). Since the groups were smaller, giving Dr. Root more one-on-one time to help each student on drills, the students were able to progress further on the basic endgame checkmate drills, with all students mastering up K and Q vs. K and a couple students making it as far as K + B + N vs. K. On the last day (Friday, July 29), Dr. Root played simuls. She lost to one parent-child combination but won the rest of the games and sold two books (donating $2 from each sale to Coppell Gifted Association).
